The Walking Dead’s Rick and Michonne Series Began Filming; Working Title Revealed

The Walking Dead spinoff series with Rick and Michonne is officially off to a start. Filming began in New Jersey on February 13th. The six-episode first season has a working title Walking Dead: Summit.

According to the film and TV production tracker Productionlist.com, the TWD spinoff starring Andrew Lincoln and Dania Gurira will shoot in Carlstadt, New Jersey and Atlanta, Georgia through March 16th. Lincoln was spotted on set getting ready to reprise his role as Rick Grimes. Gurira previously posted pictures of herself, Lincoln, and TWD Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple scouting locations for filming. It appears they were in a sports arena. You can see both social media posts below.

Lincoln’s Rick Grimes was going to make his return on the big screen. Originally planned as a trilogy, Lincoln would star in Walking Dead feature films. Instead, AMC reworked the project to be a Rick and Michonne series. The network made the announcement at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

During a coda sequence in The Walking Dead’s final episode, Michonne is seen still searching for Rick. It was also revealed that Rick is on the run from the Civic Republic Military. We haven’t seen the two Walking Dead stars together since Lincoln made his exit during The Walking Dead Season 9’s episode “What Comes After.” Rick was presumed dead until he was taken away by a CRM helicopter along with Jadis/Anne (Pollyann McInstosh). It was revealed in The Walking Dead: Beyond spinoff series that Jadis traded Rick to the CRM.

According to Gimple, The Walking Dead: Summit will follow the couple “in a romantic saga of dangerous road to each other, and the road they must find with each other, cornered by a new civilization and hordes of the dead.”

AMC Studios describes the Walking Dead spinoff: “This series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?”

The Walking Dead: Summit is set to premiere sometime in 2024 on AMC and AMC+.
