Super Mario Bros: Chris Pratt Reveals Hilarious “First Look” at the Video Game Movie

Guardians of the Mushroom Kingdom. It's a-Mario.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto revealed the release date and full cast for Illumination’s Super Mario movie during the Nintendo Direct presentation last month. The voice cast for the popular Nintendo game movie will feature Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt as Mario. As usual, funny Pratt is having some fun sharing a hilarious “first look” at the movie. It’s actually a fan-edit that shows Pratt’s Peter Quill from the first Guardians movie as Mario.

Pratt shard the fan-made video on Instagram. Someone used the scene in Guardians of the Galaxy where Quill jumps and grabs the Power Stone and superimposed Mario’s cap and mustache onto Peter’s face along with Super Mario game sound effects and other Super Mario game graphics.

“Amazing first look at Super Mario Brothers. This is going to be epic,” Pratt wrote in the caption section.

Pratt also shared a past experience on Instagram last month as part of his reaction to being cast as the voice of Mario.

“There was this coin-operated laundromat near my house, and it had Super Mario Bros., the original arcade game. I loved that game,” Pratt says in the Instagram video. He “never had a quarter, it felt like,” Pratt admitted to stealing coins from a wishing well.

“The quarter I stole out of the wishing well to play Super Mario Bros. has come true that I get to be the voice of Mario, but I clearly stole someone else’s wish. So just waiting for that row of karma dominoes to come crashing down on me,” said Pratt, “but as it is right now, it’s-a me, Mario.”

Along with Chris Pratt, the Super Mario movie cast also includes Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

The upcoming Super Mario film from Nintendo and Illumination is currently scheduled to premiere December 21, 2022. The animated film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who are known for Teen Titans Go! and Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. It’s written by Matthew Fogel who’s known for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part.
