House of the Dragon Is “Looking Spectacular” Says HBO Content Chief

Game of Thrones was one of the most successful tv shows of all time. Even with the final season getting mixed reviews, it still left fans wanting more. Since the announcement of the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, HBO and HBO Max chief content officer, Casey Bloys, has been asked everywhere he goes — What’s up with the GoT spinoffs?

In an interview with Variety, Bloys said he has been surprised by the number of people who believe multiple Game of Thrones spinoffs are being developed. He cleared the air by confirming House of the Dragon, which takes place 300 years before the events in the GoT series, is the only spinoff currently shooting. Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin is assisting in overseeing the development on at least six other projects.

”House of the Dragon is the only one shooting,” Bloys says. “All the other ones are in various stages of development. People may think we have 10 series shooting at the moment. There’s one that will be on the air in 2022. We’ll see how the other scripts come along.”

House of the Dragon is currently filming in England, led by showrunner and executive producer Ryan J. Condal and director and executive producer Migel Sapochnik who is a Game of Thrones alumni.

Bloys did not give out any spoilers, but he likes what he sees so far. “It looks spectacular,” Bloys said. “The cast that (Sapochnik) and Ryan have put together looks good.”

House of the Dragon will be based on Martins’s novel “Fire & Blood,” which is a companion to “Song of Ice and Fire” novels. The GoT spinoff prequel follows the Dance of the Dragons, the civil war between Aegon II and Rhaenyra Targaryen. The Targaryen siblings fought for the throne after their father Viserys I died.

The Dance of the Dragons forces Westero’s great houses (including the Lannisters and Starks) against each other that resulted in the death House Targaryen’s powerful dragons. After the war, the dragons would go extinct until Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) would give birth to the three dragons in the Game of Thrones series.

The show runners and executive producers for Game of Thrones “have been entirely hands off,” says Bloys. “They’re off working at Netflix.”

House of the Dragons stars Paddy Considine (HBO’s The Third Day and The Outsider), Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One), Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers), Matt Smith (The Crown, Doctor Who), Steve Toussaint (It’s a Sin, Doctor Who), Eve Best (Nurse Jackie, The King’s Speech), Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina, Crazy Rich Asians).

There is no official release date for House of the Dragons. Check back to see more updates coming soon.
