House of the Dragon First Reviews: “Better than Game of Thrones”

With the House of the Dragon release date a less than a month from now, the Game of Thrones prequel show hosted a preview screening of the pilot episode for media and the House of the Dragon first reviews are looking pretty good. There were some doubts about the spinoff, partly due to the way Game of Thrones ended, but HBO and George R.R. Martin apparently have found a way to create a show – that according to some critics – is even better than Game of Thrones.

Steven Weintraub, editor-in-chief for the entertainment news company Collider said, “I did not like the last season of Game of Thrones. At all. But I’ll admit the series premiere of House of the Dragon is really well done and I’ll continue watching.”

Indiewire called it, “Bettter than GoT and Breaking Bad.” Brandon Katz of The Wrap wrote: “The House of the Dragon pilot very efficiently explains its context in relation to GoT, introduces its core characters, and lays out the central conflict of the series. It’s an easy-to-follow premiere with vibrant colors and detailed texture. Absolutely a worthy successor so far.”

House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans.

George R.R. Martin co-created the spinoff series and also serves as executive producer. Ryan Condal, Miguel Sapochnk, and Sara Hess serve as co-showrunners and writers. The 10-episode series focuses on the Targaryens at the height of their rule in Westeros. House of the Dragon, which takes place about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, promises to deliver epic battles, lots of dragons and plenty of blonde hair.

House of the Dragon release date is August 21, 2022 on HBO and streaming on HBO Max. You can read the House of the Dragon first reviews below.

I did not like the last season of #GameofThrones. At all. But I’ll admit the series premiere of #HouseOfTheDragonHBO is really well done and I’ll definitely continue watching. After the episode ended they showed an extended preview of the season and looks cool. pic.twitter.com/wzuIMkZWe0

#HouseoftheDragon REVIEW: FIRE WILL REIGN! Wow. Violent! Shocking! EPIC. Better than GoT & Breaking Bad. HBO does it again. This isn’t just another fantasy show, it’s the BEST series ever made! Great action & music too. A fitting end setting up what’s next. #HotD #GameofThrones pic.twitter.com/NfcEInpSHI

For those curious about the series, without spoilers, I can say that the thing I really dig is the fact that it still feels epic in scale and scope while telling a personal and intimate story about one family, showcasing both their love and dysfunction

I didn’t know how much I missed the #GameofThrones theme song until I heard it tonight at the #HouseoftheDragon premiere! That first episode is fantastic! Can’t wait to see what’s next. Fingers crossed it’s no repeat of the final season of GoT. @BlackGirlNerds #hbo #HBOMax pic.twitter.com/8EZYC8iLY8

Rubbed elbows with one of the double D’s, expert action director Sappochnick, Matt Smith, the Musk man himself (lol)… Pretty great night all told. But what did I think of that hot, hot, HOTD? …
