House of the Dragon will see the return of the Targaryens this summer on HBO and HBO Max. On Wednesday morning, the network announced the House of the Dragon release date will be on August 12. HBO also revealed a new poster for its first spin-off series of its record-breaking TV show Game of Thrones.

House of the Dragon Release Date Is August 12, 2022

The ten-episode prequel series is set two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. It will depict how House Targaryen fell into its brutal civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons — the beginning of the end of Westeros’ ruling family.

House of the Dragon series was created by author George R.R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal (Colony). It’s based on Martin’s novel titled Fire & Blood. Condal and director Miguel Sapochnik will serve as executive producers and co-showrunners for the series. Martin will also be executive producing the show.

Just like the Game of Thrones series, House of the Dragon, will have a big cast but with a smaller core set of characters. The show stars Paddy Considine as King Viserys I, Emmy D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenrya, Viserays’ first child and his heir apparent, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon, Viserys’ younger brother, Why Ifans as Per Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, Olivia Cooke as Lady Alicent Hightower, Otto’s daughter and Fabien Frankel as Per Criston Cole, a knight who has eyes for Prince Rhaenrya.

House of the Dragon also stars Eve Best, Ryan Corr, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Steve Toussaint, Sonoya Mizuno, Graham McTavish, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson and Gavin Spokes.

The House of the Dragon release date means it has a head start on another massive fantasy series coming this year. Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, a prequel to the entire Lord of the Rings franchise will debut on Amazon Prime video on September 2.

In February, Martin announced on his personal blog that production Season 1 of House of the Dragon had wrapped. “I have seen rough cuts of a few of them, and I’m loving them,” Martin wrote. “Of course, a lot more work needs to be done. Special effects, color timing, score, all the post production work. But the writing, the directing, the acting all look terrific. I hope you will like them as much as I do.”

HBO and HBO Max chief Casey Bloys told Variety that “it’s probably a pretty good bet” that the network will order a second season. “Generally speaking, we usually let something air and see how it does, but obviously, we’ll make preparations ahead of time to make sure we’re ahead of the game,” Bloys said.
