For Black Panther fans tuning in to Marvel’s What If…? series on Disney+ this Wednesday, they are going to get a very unexpected treat. A Tweet from Cosmic Media has confirmed that the late Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa will officially return in an upcoming episode.

The episode will offer a reexamination of T’Challa’s life established in the Oscar-nominated film, with him no longer on the Black Panther path, as he becomes the boy selected to be taken into space by the Ravagers and grows up to be Star-Lord.

Marvel fans are sure to enjoy the merging of two popular franchises—The Guardians of the Galaxy and Black Panther—and especially love that we’re getting to see more of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa, even if it’s in a way most haven’t thought about before.

Boseman voiced the episode before his tragic death in 2019, and Marvel fans have been waiting for the appearance, not knowing that it would arrive so soon in the Disney+ show.

The trailers for the show already provided a glimpse of the animated version of his character and hearing his looming voice made many emotional, with social media sites jumping with discussions of the upcoming appearance.

Boseman actually recorded several episodes of What If…? so his character will be back, and could be changing his heroic status again in the future.

For those who still haven’t checked out the show, Jeffrey Wright headlines What If…? as the enigmatic cosmic entity known as The Watcher. The actor talked to EW about working with Boseman before his untimely death.

“I was really moved to hear Chadwick Boseman voice T’Challa again as he does in the show,” Wright said during the interview. “I actually first met him when Black Panther was being introduced at Comic-Con. We saw each other from time to time after that and just to watch him grow as an actor and watch him take on this character, to see what that character meant, and to understand that he was doing that while facing serious challenges, I just find to be on the level of heroism that Black Panther himself is on.”

See Marvel’s What If…? on Disney+ with new episodes premiering every Wednesday.
