DC Studios released the official Blue Beetle movie trailer this morning. Cobra Kai actor Xolo Maridueña stars as DC’s first latino superhero, Jaime Reyes.
Jaime, a recent college graduate, gains superpowers after being fused together with an armor from an alien scarab technology. He must now come to terms with his newfound abilities, while uncovering the mystery behind the scarab being on Earth and why it chose him as its host.
According to a new plot synopsis for the Blue Beetle movie via Comicbook.com: “Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.”
The Blue Beetle movie also stars Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood) as Jaime’s grandmother, Nana; Damian Alcázar (Narcos) as his father, Alberto; Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans M.C.) as his mother, Bianca; Belissa Escobedo (Hocus Pocus 2) as his sister, Milagro; George Lopez as his Uncle Rudy; and Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord. Raoul Max Trujillo (Sicario) plays the film’s villain Carapax, the indestructible man. Harvey Guillén (What We Do In the Shadows) as Dr. Sanchez, and Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord.
“We wanted to keep it as authentic as possible, not Hallmark, cookie-cutter Latinos,” director Angel Manuel Soto told ComicBook and other outlets about making DC’s first Latino-led superhero movie during a Blue Beetle trailer reveal. “We wanted [the audience to] feel like, ‘Yeah, that’s my uncle,’ or ‘I can totally relate to that.'”
Maridueña added, “It’s kind of funny: We see some of these other superheroes who are able to hide the fact that they’re a superhero from their family. But as you just saw in the trailer, his family is right there on that first transformation. So good luck keeping that a secret! Coming through this journey together is something that we haven’t seen before in superhero movies, and that really is the beating heart of this movie. It transcends ethnicity and it transcends color of skin — because that’s something we can all relate to.”
