Why Batgirl Movie Was Cancelled; Warner Bros. Issues Statement

The Batgirl movie has been cancelled despite being deep in post-production and just hours after the announcement, Warner Brothers issued a statement saying the decision was strictly business-related. In a statement via THR, a spokesperson for the studio said they would still like to work with the talent in future projects though the feature films they have already worked on with them were cancelled.

“The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max,” said a Warner Bros. spokesperson in a statement. “Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future.”

Actor Leslie Grace was set to star as Barbara Gordon in the Batgirl movie. Unfortunately now, we will never see the release of the DC film. It was reported that it would not be seen in theaters or on HBO Max.

“She definitely exceeds what I thought,” Grace said in an interview with Variety earlier this year. “I had to summon up some things in me that I didn’t even know were there. It was an incredible learning experience to be on set with also action veterans like Brendan Fraser, and soak up it all up. It was so hard because he’s our villain and I’m not supposed to like but he’s such a huge teddy bear. He is one of the nicest people that I’ve ever met. In our fight sequences the way he would just hit marks, it came from all of his experience. You can’t improvise that kind of experience. There’s some crazy stuff that happens. There’s lots of fire because as everyone knows by now, he plays Firefly. There’s crazy fire. There’s crazy stunts, crazy drops. She’s a biker chick, so you’re going to see her do a bunch of badassery.”
The Batgirl movie was directed by Fallah and El Arbi. The film was written by Christina Hodson. The cast included Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon / Batgirl, JK Simmons reprising his role as Commissioner Gordon, and Michael Keaton coming back as Bruce Wayne / Batman. Brendan Fraser also joined the cast of the Batgirl movie as Firefly.
The Batgirl movie is just another setback WB / Discovery has faced in the past few months. Troubled Flash star Ezra Miller’s future as Barry Allen is looking bleak after being arrested twice in two weeks while in Hawaii. Amber Heard’s role in the Aquaman sequel is still up in the air since her defamation trial against ex-husband Johnny Depp caused some questions to her continuing as Mera for the DCEU.
But other DC projects look promising such as Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam film which is set to premiere on October 21, 2022 and Shazam! Fury of the Gods on December 21, 2022. Both DC films are releasing in theaters only.
